Blue Damsel
An imitation of the adult damselfly, known for its vibrant color and realistic profile, which is irresistible to fish during a damselfly hatch.
How it's tied
The Blue Damsel Fly is typically tied on a dry fly hook, usually in sizes 10 to 14. The body is made with blue thread, floss or foam, often over-wrapped with a thin clear material to provide a segmented appearance.
Wings are typically made from white or light-colored synthetic materials, tied in so they arch back over the body or stick out perpendicular to the body. A pair of prominent eyes is added behind the hook eye, and long, wispy hackle fibers can be used to mimic the damselfly's legs.
What it mimics
The Blue Damsel Fly pattern is designed to mimic an adult damselfly, particularly the common blue damselfly. These insects are often found near still waters during late spring and early summer, where they lay their eggs and become a favored meal for many fish species.
Where it's used
The Blue Damsel Fly is primarily used in stillwater environments like lakes and ponds, where damselflies are most prevalent. It's especially effective when fished near reeds, lily pads, and other shoreline vegetation where adult damselflies are known to land and rest.
This fly can be cast out and left to float, imitating a resting damselfly, or twitched gently on the surface to mimic a damselfly struggling in the water.
