Where you can find Twaid shad
On this map you see where there were observations of Twaid shad around the world, to give you an idea in which continents, countries and waters you can find this fish species.
Best described as an oversized herring, the twaid shad is a strong fish that's a lot of fun to catch on the fly.
How to fly fish for twaid shad?
You'll find twaid shad along the coast in the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Norway. You'll be able to catch them on the fly from May to September. They'll be hunting in very large shoals in the large rivers close to where these end in the sea (there where there's still tide). Best fished from a dam stretching into such a river on a hot summer day. When they're hunting there will be splashes on the surface of baitfish trying to escape. Don't be fooled though: the large shoal will be far below, even though you can see them hunting on the. surface. A DI3 to DI7 line is best, depending on how much current there is.
What flies work best for twaid shad?
These green or yellow, small baitfish patterns always work and are the only fly you'll need. Other small baitfish patterns can work too, but don't go too large: an EP streamer is too much. Depending on how deep they and what line you're using, you can opt for one with a tungsten head.
