Saw Mill Fly Casting
After two decades of service as a police officer, Jay Engel chose to turn his lifelong enthusiasm for fly fishing into a shared experience with others. An ardent angler from an early age, Jay recently embraced fly casting—a technique that leverages the weight of the fly line for casting over varying distances. Drawing parallels from his rowing background, Jay equates fly casting's skill and technique to that of using a rowing machine for rowing, highlighting it as an independent sport within the broader realm of fly fishing.
In his quest for mastery, Jay completed the prestigious L.L.Bean Fly Fishers International Casting Instructor Preparation Course in May 2019, under the tutelage of the globally acclaimed caster, Macauley Lord. He is now in the process of acquiring a Casting Instructor (CI) certification from Fly Fishers International.
November 2019 marked the launch of Saw Mill Fly Cast by Jay, aimed at fostering the sport of fly casting among beginners. He views fly casting as a lifelong sport and believes that with a few lessons, enthusiasts can take their newfound skills to waters worldwide. Jay is deeply committed to supporting individuals with disabilities, first responders, and veterans dealing with PTSD, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences and the therapeutic nature of fishing.
